DIY: Galaxy Nail Trend

16 May

Galaxy Print is currently a trend I’ve spotted on Pinterest. People are putting this print on clothes, shoes, accessories and even on their finger nails! I decided to hop on the galaxy bandwagon and tried my hand at creating the print on my nails.

Galaxy Nails DIYI researched examples on Pinterest to get started. I noticed many used the sponging on method. I don’t have any cosmetic or painting sponges so I searched for an alternative way. I’ve seen people use the “Saran Wrap” method to create a swirled look and thought that technique might work for this. So I read up on how to do it and gathered my supplies!

What You Need:

Saran Wrap

Paper Plate

Scissors

Black Nail Polish

Glittery Nail Polish

2-3 other Nail polish colors that seem “galaxy-ish” Your choice!

Base Coat

Clear Top Coat

Nail Polish colors for Galaxy Nails

First I cut up pieces of saran wrap, bunched them up and placed them on the paper plate. I knew once my nails were wet I wouldn’t want to risk smudging by messing with saran wrap.  Then I prepped my nails by filing them and applying a base coat, I used Avon Nail Experts Smooth Beginnings. Then I painted my nails with Avon Speed Dry in Rapid Black.

Black Nail Polish

This nail polish dries very quickly but just to be sure I waited a full five minutes before starting the saran wrap. To do the saran wrap method you first put some nail color on the paper plate, just a little bit. Then get your bunched up saran wrap and dip it in the nail polish. Blot it on the paper plate (you can see where I did) to remove excess. Then quickly dab your nail in the desired areas. You will need to reapply nail polish to the saran wrap to get color on each nail. Use a different saran wrap piece for each color.

Saran Wrap method

I began to layer on colors starting with the lightest and ending with my glitter color.

I finished it off with a coat of Avon Speed Dry Top Coat. I’m very pleased with how it turned out and now I want to experiment with other color combos!

How do you feel about the galaxy print trend, into it or meh?

San Francisco Golden Gate Park

8 May

First off, before I get into how much I fell in love with Golden Gate Park, I must say that the public transportation system in San Francisco is superb. Our City Pass allowed us to board anything in the Muni system and the trolleys. Each bus stop was clean, covered and included a digital display letting travelers know when the next bus would arrive. Compared to the dirty, uncovered benches in L.A. that I’ve only passed by the San Francisco system seems a lot better. We took the bus to Golden Gate park and back to our hotel with ease.

Flowers at Golden Gate Park

Anyway, on with the park! Golden Gate Park must be something similar to Central Park in New York, although I can’t say for sure because I have yet to visit New York! There is so much beauty in this park. From casual walking trails, meadows, lakes, groves and gardens there is plenty of space to take a walk and clear your mind. You can also visit the De Young Museum and California Academy of Sciences.

We and strolled around one of the lakes and hiked up Strawberry Hill. I love that there were people sitting on benches causally sipping wine! If I ever move to San Francisco I would pick a place near this park. I sensed the importance of healthy living and family in San Francisco. I observed mom’s walking with strollers, adult children walking with their elders.

If you ever visit San Francisco definitely block off a day to enjoy this park. Start your day with a walk then head over to one of the gardens and spend the rest of the day exploring museums.

San Francisco Tonga Room Review

1 May

After hearing so many wonderful things about the Tonga Room in San Francisco we were pretty excited to check it out. We read about it in our AAA guidebook and got word of mouth reviews from my friend and even from a cab driver in San Francisco! However, there were some good things and some bad things about our experience at the Tonga Room.

The decor in the Tonga Room is purposely kitschy Polynesian themed. Every so often water falls from the ceiling (a tropical rainstorm) into a pool set in the middle of the room. A band plays purposely kitschy well-known songs from a boat floating in the pool. There is a bar and dance floor as well as tables and chairs for meals.

We went for dinner and arrived 15 minutes before the cut off to pay a cover. They made us wait the 15 minutes in order to charge the cover. Not cool Tonga Room! We were seated and shortly after that placed our drink orders. If you go, definitely order the Mai Tai! As I sipped it I was immediately transported back to Hawaii. It was a good strong drink, totally worth the price. Plus it comes in this ceramic coconut drinkware!

coconut

The menu is small, there isn’t much too choose from and it is pricey. For our appetizer we ordered calamari. That tasted great, nice and cripsy and the dipping sauce was zesty. A perfect start to our meal. I chose the orange chicken, Kyle ordered roasted chicken, and our friend Jon ordered coconut prawns. My dish tasted good, the chicken was juicy and the glaze was nice. It wasn’t amazing but it wasn’t bad. Kyle did not like his chicken and did not like the way his asparagus was cooked. Jon’s dish however, was awful. The shell was left on the prawns and he lost his appetite. The waitress graciously took the plate away and removed the item from our bill.

I unfortunately do not have any photos of our food because it was after a long day of sight-seeing for me and Kyle. We were famished by this time and just dug into our meals when they arrived. Plus the dim ambient lighting didn’t allow for good photos, although it did set a nice mood.

I would recommend going to the Tonga Room to enjoy a Mai Tai or two at the bar and just have fun dancing and listening to the band. Maybe going for lunch might be a better experience! I do not regret going, it was all part of the San Francisco experience for me.

San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf Pier 39

29 Apr

One of San Francisco’s main tourist attractions is Fisherman’s Wharf or Pier 39. On our first full day in the city Kyle and I set out for a day out at Pier 39. We purchased a City Pass in advance and it again was such a great idea and made our adventuring easier. If you’ve been reading this blog a while, you might remember we used the City Pass when we visited Atlanta.

We stopped at The Chowder Hut on our way over to the pier to grab a steaming hot sourdough bread bowl full of chowder. Kyle went with the traditional clam and I picked a spiced up crab version. Both were yummy, filling and really hit the spot. chowder

First thing we did after that was get our tickets for the Blue and Gold Fleet Bay Cruise. We just showed them our City Passes and they gave us tickets. We had an hour before the cruise started so we wandered around the pier a little bit.

boat

Oh look. A boat. One of the Blue and Gold Fleet boats.

One store I was really excited about shopping in was Lefty’s The Left Hand Store. I picked up a few items to make living in a righty world a little easier for me. I bought scissors, a notebook, pens and a mug for myself and picked up a lefty tape measure for my brother-in-law. Even if you’re not a lefty its still fun to go in and see how things are different. You can test out some scissors, pens and can openers and really get a feel for what it is like to live in a world not made for you!

leftysOn our way to board the boat and experience the bay tour we stopped to check out these guys. These are California sea lions. Do you know what this difference is between sea lions and seals? Sea lions have little ears on their heads where seals do not! Seal ears are internal and sea lion ears are external. I learned this back in elementary school and for some reason it stuck with me…Anyway!

California Sea Lions

The boat was two levels, the bottom level contained a bar (we did not partake) and the top was open to the ocean  air and elements. After stepping out into the air we decided we’d be more comfortable just hanging out below. The large windows made it easy to enjoy the sights while staying warm. Plus the top level was jammed packed with other tourists vying for a great view.

From our brief moment on the upper level. A little bit too much wind for us!

From our brief moment on the upper level. A little bit too much wind for us!

I liked that the there was an audio portion to the tour that let us know interesting facts about the history of the city, the small surrounding islands and the Golden Gate Bridge. I didn’t like that it was pre-recorded and cut out several times. Aside from that, I loved it!

It's Alcatraz!

It's the Golden Gate bridge!

It’s the Golden Gate bridge!

We even went UNDER the bridge...woweeee...

We even went UNDER the bridge…woweeee…

The next day we went back to the pier with our friend and saw a few more things like the Musee Mecanique. It is located on Pier 45 right across the street from The Chowder Hut. This place is part museum, part arcade. The games inside are vintage with only a few modern arcade games. If you visit this place be sure to bring some pocket change to see the vintage games come to life. Most of the machines aren’t even “games” they are more like forms of entertainment like those nickelodeon style moving pictures. Put a coin in, press your face to the goggles and crank the handle to see a short silent movie.

The last place we visited on the pier was the Aquarium of the Bay. This was included in our City Pass. If it were not part of the City Pass deal I would say it is not worth the money. It’s kind of small and includes basic aquarium features like touch pools and a conveyor to view the shark tank and the fish tank.

On our way back to the hotel we grabbed some ice cream cones from the Ben & Jerry’s on the pier. The waffle cone was perfect and the ice cream was divine!

A Night In San Francisco

26 Apr

Our first night out in San Francisco consisted of hopping from one night spot to the next as our friend scouted potential venues for his business. Before he started any of that, we made a stop at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in Union Square. He needed to show us the spectacular view at the top floor from The Starlight Room. I’m so glad he showed us this place, it is a classy night spot with an incredible view!

The elevator opened its doors to the 21st floor and we walked into the Starlight Room by crossing through elegant red curtains. A large table with a decadent arrangement of long stem red roses greeted us at the entrance, along with a friendly host. To the right is a bar and to the left plush red booths, stylish chairs and tables. The walls are painted red with gold accents, giving off an old Hollywood vibe. At the very end of the space is an open dance floor where windows line the walls to show off the San Francisco cityscape.

Perfect spot for a photo-op!

We walked over to the dance floor which, did not include anyone dancing because it was still somewhat early in the night plus it was a Thursday. Other patrons seated at tables were catching a late dinner or early cocktail. After taking in the scenery we headed back the bar to order a drink and relax. Kyle got a rum and coke, our friend Jon ordered a beer and I carefully selected a drink from the cocktail menu. I chose the Colorado Vs. Hunters S. Thompson that consisted of Absolut Vodka, Hibiscus Cordial, Lemon and Orange Curacao. It tasted crisp, fresh and citrusy and not at all overwhelmingly fruity. The bar tender let me know this was their trademark and most popular cocktail, and I ordered it without knowing beforehand!

We sipped our drinks, took another lap around the dance floor to enjoy the view, snapped some photos and went to our next location.

Kyle, myself and Jon--dapper darlings.

Posing like we’re at the prom.

Next up was the Supper Club. The first room we walked into had a circular bar with red walls and dark lighting. The next room was much larger and total opposite. Everything was white–walls, floor, seating, stairs–all white! The seating consisted of bed like cushions against the walls on the lower and upper levels. Note for the future, don’t wear stilettos if you plan on going on the upper floor. It’s filled with small holes and I can see someone’s heel getting caught causing a spill! There was a large dance floor and at one point they cleared the dance floor to make way for a performer. She was a contortionist or acrobat of some sort and everyone was amazed by her talents. My brain still can’t comprehend that amount of flexibility! The show was not lewd in any way whatsoever, she was legit.

Just chillen on one hand.

Just chillen on one hand.

It just so happened that SOMA Magazine was hosting a party that same night so when we left they gave me a swag bag and I scored some Lancome products! Thanks SOMA Mag! After we scoped out Supper Club we headed to Monarch. This place is split into two floors. The top is a bar and lounge area. There is a big hole cut and framed behind the bar. On the other side is the seating area with Victorian Era looking couches and chairs. Downstairs is a large dance floor, DJ booth and stage along with a bar. When we came back upstairs to enjoy a drink in the seating area we were surprised to see that SAME acrobat chick working it in that HOLE IN THE WALL! It’s actually a space for performances! We were pretty impressed!

I’m not familiar with this area of San Francisco but the Supper Club manager warned us that although Monarch is in a somewhat sketchy looking area, once you get inside it’s actually quite nice. I have to agree with him!

See the framed hole in the wall up there?

Finally, we went back to the hotel and changed into casual clothes. Jon was done scouting locations for the night so we decided to hit up a dive bar we saw earlier that day after walking back from dinner. It’s called Kennedy’s Irish Pub & Indian Curry House. One half of the room is Irish Pub, the other half Indian food. Delightfully divey! We split one pitcher of beer and played a few rounds of pool. This place served only beer. We went over to the next delightfully divey bar when a little moused scurried by Jon’s foot. I stepped back, jaw dropped and unable to find my voice. It happened so quickly! Aside from Mickey Mouse paying us a visit, that place was just right for what it was.

Our very last stop for the night was The International Sports Bar. They serve liquor and beer but only accept cash. Jon and I played a game of Foosball with strangers, we won (of course)! After that we called it a night and walked back to the hotel.

That first night in San Francisco was amazing and a wonderful way to kick off the trip. I love that we went from very dressed up and elegant to ending our night in a good old fashioned dive bar. It’s like we did everything in one night. Great memories!

San Francisco BurgerMeister Review

24 Apr

I visited San Francisco for the second time EVER just a few weeks ago. The first time I went was a very brief visit, I wrote about it here. This time I stayed for 4 days and really got to explore this beautiful city by the sea!We road tripped it from Los Angeles to San Francisco with one of our good friends, Jon. He’s been Kyle’s friend since kindergarten and I’ve been friends with him since high school. He’s actually going to be one of Kyle’s best men at our wedding!

We arrived at the San Francisco Marriott at Fisherman’s Wharf, quickly checked in and set off on foot to find a place to grab dinner. We stopped at BurgerMeister on Columbus Ave. I ordered the Kobe Beef Steakhouse Salad, which as Kyle noted, was more steak than salad. The food came out in a timely manner, the drinks were self serve, the food tasted great and each menu item cost about $10. It’s a great little burger joint in the North Beach area, I recommend it as a dinner or lunch spot. Kyle ordered chicken strips with fries and Jon got a burger and fries. My salad was so large I grabbed a to go container and stashed it in the hotel fridge for a midnight snack that we all split later.

steak salad

Delicious, heavenly plate-o-meat. There’s some greenery sticking out in places…see!

Once we were back at the hotel, dressed up for a night on the town. I’ll tell you all about that in a different post. Since Jon is a promoter for Groove International he set up appointments with venues to scout locations for potential future booking opportunities. While he did business, we got to scope out different parts of San Francisco night life. We visited five nightclubs in one night so that experience definitely deserves its own post!

All dressed up with LOTS of places to go!

Wedding Updates

17 Apr

It’s been quite a while since I mentioned anything about my wedding here. The wedding is coming soon, a little less than four months to go! I’ve read on many different wedding forums and websites that it is not polite to discuss wedding details with people who are not invited, especially on the internet. I’ve read that it might lead to people to thinking they are invited, it spoils surprises for the guests and solicits unwanted opinions–plus many other reasons. I just can’t hold back anymore though!

We’ve picked out so many of the big details like venue, dress, tux, groomsmen and bridesmaid attire, flowers, cake, music, food, officiant, ceremony plan and invitations. Now we’re just working our way through the little details. So, please, indulge in a little wedding excitement with me! Here are SOME details we’ve confirmed:

521298_4926225447972_161314373_n

Cocktail napkins! SOOooo exciting….right? Not really. But it’s something small that I feel is okay to share here. We ordered them through our venue. The venue we are going through is amazing! They really do take care of everything. I don’t have to worry about renting tables, chairs, linens, lights, DJ, catering…all those important things that make an event complete.

Groomsmen Tux from Men's Wearhouse

The groomsmen and ring bearer will all wear this tux. We ordered it from Men’s Wearhouse and it matches the bridesmaids dresses exactly. Groom will be wearing this same suit but with a different accent color, that part I’ll leave as a secret!

Bridesmaid Dress from David's Bridal

So that brings us to the bridesmaids dresses! Gorgeous, right? It’s from the Vera Wang Spring 2013 line at David’s Bridal. It’s designer style at a pretty reasonable price!

Now…some bridal details!

Bridal Shoes from Aldo

These are my shoes! I bought these at Aldo, spent more than I normally would on shoes but I know I can wear these again. I like that the heel isn’t super high and I LOVE all the sparkles! Makes you wonder what my dress might look like…..

Wedding Day Cocktail Napkinsn

Well maybe these pearls might throw you off with your dress guessing! A little bit of sparkle mixed in with classic pearls. One of my bridesmaids made this for me, which I truly appreciate and creates more meaning behind the jewelry. I think it looks expensive and elegant when really I bought the beads at Michael’s while she envisioned the design and created it! Who else thinks my friend should open her own Etsy shop?

That’s all folks! I hope you enjoyed this little peek into what the wedding might be like! So, what are your feelings on people discussing their weddings publicly? Do you agree with the wedding forums and websites?

Rainbow St. Patricks Day 1st Birthday Party

2 Apr

We celebrated my niece’s first birthday last month with a Rainbow/St. Patrick’s Day theme. Her birthday is on St. Patrick’s Day and my sister and brother-in-law threw a spectacular bash with lots of activities for the kiddos and plenty of food and drink for the grown-ups.

Party games for the kids included:

Pin the clover on the Leprechaun – A magnetic leprechaun set assembled on the fridge and kids tried to get the clover onto his hat, while blindfolded of course! The kid who got it the closest won a prize.

Clover Walk – Just like a Cake Walk, kids walked around a circle of numbered four leaf clover cut outs and when the music stopped, they stopped. We drew a number at random and the lucky kid standing on that number won a prize.

Find the Leprechaun’s Gold – We hid plastic eggs (d0n’t judge–it’s convenient!) around the yard and one contained a piece of the Leprechaun’s gold. The other eggs contained candy. The kid who found the gold won a prize!

A jolly jump and pinata were also part of the fun! Now on to some pictures, I didn’t take many because I spent my time socializing, keeping an eye on my nephew and helping out with the games–anyway here they are:

Decorating Cupcakes

The night before we prepared by baking cupcakes. For the rainbows my sister bought rainbow sour belts that we cut to size and placed over white frosted funfetti cupcakes in an arch shape.

Rainbow Cupcakes and Pots of Gold

This is the final result of the rainbow cupcakes! We also prepared the leprechaun pots of gold the night before. We filled them with colorful jelly beans and golden nuggets.

Rainbow Cake Table

The cake table held cupcakes, leprechaun pots of gold and cake. My sister chose plates, cups, tablecloths, and balloons in a rainbow of colors to match the theme. She also set up a party favor table with assorted St. Patrick’s Day accessories like green bead necklaces, Irish themed pins, clover sunglasses and green hats. The children also received favor bags sealed with a four leaf clover.

Cute Girl St Patricks Day Birthday Outfits

The birthday girl in her outfits for the day. A big pink fluffy dress of course! Then as the day wound down she switched into a St. Patrick’s Day outfit.

Birthday Party Success

The next day my sister sent this photo of my niece thoroughly enjoying her Little Tikes Pillow Racer unicorn. I’d say from this photo, the party was a total win!

Favorite Food

26 Mar

My top favorite foods would be Mexican, Greek and Italian. Exact dishes would be my mom’s enchiladas, albondigas, pozole and chilaquiles. Nothing beats a mother’s cooking! My mom doesn’t make tamales but I also love those too!

With Greek food I love felafel, hummus and pita bread. I love the way my step-grandmother made her cucumber Greek style salad and her baklava. It’s hard to find perfect baklava–either it’s way too dry our way too much honey is used. She introduced us to her Greek style cooking and I have great memories attached to those flavors.

With Italian food I really like eggplant parmigana. Pretty much all Italian food is good because I love the use of pasta, tomato and cheeses.

YUM! I just love food!

Location

25 Mar

The prompt for today is “Describe your location”

Anyone who knows me well will know that I highly dislike my current location. If you’ve been reading this blog for the past few months you might have already read about my disdain for the area. Most people I know from Ventura County will always choose VC over the San Fernando Valley any day. When a new construction project starts in VC you might hear people mutter, “UGH They’re trying to get us to look like LA..” We like our open skies, close knit communities, easy to access beaches and traffic-light roads. If this makes me sound like a total snob-oh well I don’t care! I just find my part (and many parts) of Los Angeles to be ugly.

I prefer green open spaces and a blue sky unobstructed by buildings, billboards, power lines and neon signs. When I look around and see more pavement than dirt it makes me uncomfortable.

Ugly building across from CSUNThis eye sore is in my neighborhood directly across the street from the university.

Ugliness in the San Fernando Valley
That’s a motorized mannequin wearing a blonde wig waving a sign. I “get” to see this on my way home from work.

I’d much rather live in a quiet, peaceful, gorgeous corner of Ventura County with the option to drive out to LA for some adventures. To us LA is not some magical land. I used to have some friends in a band that joked, “You want to make it big in Hollywood?” “What–you mean 40 minutes down the 101?” Maybe if I was from middle of nowhere USA I might find big cities more intriguing.
